Treadle Lathe At 3rd Ward Show - January 4-5 2013

We will be out in full force at this year's Third Ward LN Hand Tool Show. Tim is bringing his treadle lathe and you will be able to have a whack at treadle turning if you wish. As you can see in the photo the lathe uses live centers instead of dead ones for a more efficient footwork. This is what happens when tool makers make their own thousand year old hand tool device. We will also have all the Gramercy Tool tools for inspection and purchase, our new US made Vises, new world famous totebags and free hard copies of Modern Edge Tools. For the first time since we are doing the show we will be able to take credit cards and we will have some merchandise available for cash and carry.
The show run: Friday, January 4th, 2013 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM and Saturday, January 5th, 2013 from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Our host is 3rd Ward, a multi-disciplinary workspace and education center in Bushwich, Brooklyn.

HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF:

In addition to a gleaming new booth, we will be bringing tools for demo's, our treadle lathe for you to try, and donating 15% of our total show sales to Hurricane Sandy Relief.

It has been over a month since Hurricane Sandy made headlines, but there are still those for whom the storms impact is still keenly felt. Tools for Working Wood will be donating 15% of our total sales from the show to Occupy: Sandy Relief.

Is there a site where we could see more detailed photos of the treadle lathe? From the photo, it appears to be at least partly made using standard dimensional lumber, and I'd welcome the chance to see more of the design. If I were anywhere near Brooklyn, I'd drop in to see the show (which I hope goes well for all involved).

We will have pictures of the event and I think at some point the lathe will become a public project - right now it is a work in progress.

I second the vote for more info on the treadle lathe. I'm particularly interested in the source for the metal bits. I have plans from several sources (including TFWW, IIRC), but have been stymied finding suitable metal parts.

What's the best way to get to Third Ward using mass transit? I'll be coming in on the LIRR from Huntington. What stop to I need to take and how do I get to Third Ward once I leave the train?

I Third the vote for more info. I believe Roy featured one as part of one of the Woodwright's Shop shows but I'm not sure. I'd like to try my hand at building one. Thanks for all the good tools and information.

I don't know how to get there by LIRR but the "L" train is only a few blocks away - about a 10 minute walk. The link in the blog to Third Ward has a map and directions and shows the subway stations. See you there!

Interesting. My treadle design is using a lot of modern equipment but I'm not sure how a pair of live centers would work since they spin freely. How can you then transfer the flywheel motion to the work without a fixed drive center? I used 2 live centers on my pole lathe but that is an entirely different action. Wish I could make it up to the show and I hope more info will be available on the lathe in the future. Enjoy the show!

Our Treadle lathe doesn't have a flywheel. It's an earlier design where the treadle is attached to a string which wraps directly around the work. I suppose I should have called it a "Spring Pole Lathe" to differentiate to the more common Treadle lathe which uses a flywheel and has continuous rotation.
